Health: Create a leaner you

Another summer of riding is in full swing and with it another chance to improve your riding, your physique and your achievements. It may be that you are just riding to work each day and want less weight to drag up each hill. Or maybe you are coming back to racing only to find a spare tyre on your waist which you’re obviously none too pleased about. Whether you are riding to go faster or looking for better endurance the time is right for getting leaner…
Back when Lance Armstrong was winning Tours he reckoned on losing about 3-5kg in his build up to the tour. He was hardly fat in the off-season but by July he had turned himself into a lean, mean cycling machine. He started in earnest back in the spring but you can do things right now to get leaner and ride faster – especially uphill where it’s you, your bike and Isaac Newton: gravity!
So right now tell your partner, work mates and riding buddies what you plan to do over the coming months – that is, commit to get leaner. It could be lose a stone, dropa belt buckle notch or have the fat percentage scales drop three percent.
Whatever it is write your goals down. Now! And while you’re writing make another copy and give it to your nominated referee.
Make your goal something that you really have passion to achieve. Not just “I would like.…” but “I really have to have…”. Putting them on paper is like writing a contract of commitment between yourself and your conscience on what you really want to do by year’s end. So if you don’t come up to scratch you’ll have your adjudicator(s) to answer too and your own conscience to live with.
So step away from the computer for a few moments (possibly the hardest part of the challenge ahead) and write down your current details e.g. weight, height, goals, and then take a good photo of you in your underwear (take it in the mirror if no one else is brave enough). That way you have an exact starting point and no excuses. This allows you to state your goals and make the commitment a reality. Now there’s motivation to reach your potential!

Hearing on new plan for Eden condos postponed

Published June 3rd,, 2008
By Dale M. King
Developers of the Eden condominium project – a development in the works for six years with no apparent completion in sight – were scheduled to appear before the Boca Raton Planning & Zoning Board this week with a proposal to save the four-building complex.
But the session has been postponed indefinitely, according to a legal ad posted by the city of Boca Raton.
Steven Platzek, attorney for several Eden residents, asked for a delay. “Given that my clients only recently received notice of the committee’s intention to conduct the meeting to approve the developers’ modified site plan, I respectfully request that the Planning & Zoning [Board] postpone the scheduled meeting 60 days to allow my clients time to obtain a land use attorney to investigate the propriety of the developers’ proposed modification.
Platzek also said that he was retained by several unit owners who allege that the developers failed “to adequately and timely complete the development as promised pursuant to the unit owners’ contract for purchase and sale they entered into with the developer several years ago.”
Originally conceived as a luxury condo project, Eden has fallen on hard financial times and suffered construction setbacks, according to officials from Ceebraid-Signal and Boca East LLC, the firms involved in the project.
Recently, the Florida Attorney General’s Office, Economic Crimes division, subpoenaed records from Boca East LLC and Ceebraid-Signal Corp.
A few weeks earlier, the Florida Department of Business & Professional Regulations launched two investigations of Boca East LLC and Adam Schlesinger, Eden’s project manager.
Messages left by the Boca Raton News at those offices have not been returned.
In the meantime, the developers are scheduled to appear before the P&Z Board at some time in the future to discuss changing the complex from all condos to 248 independent age-restricted living units, to be built in conjunction with Parc Communities. They will likely be rental units.

UNC baseball team searches for a home

The College World Series in underway in Omaha, Neb.
University of Northern Colorado baseball coach Kevin Smallcomb is confident that one day his program will make it back to college baseball’s national championship tournament.
Once a regular participant in the tournament, UNC’s most recent appearance came in 1974 as a Division I independent. Times have changed, however, and Smallcomb knows to make it back someday, the program’s best bet is to be a member of a conference.
UNC became an official member of the Big Sky Conference two years ago, but because the conference doesn’t sponsor baseball, Smallcomb’s program has been in search of a conference of its own.
Although UNC has applied to the Western Athletic Conference and The Summit League (formerly the Mid-Continent Conference), Smallcomb and others associated with the program believe the Mountain West Conference would be the best fit for UNC.
The Mountain West Conference has seven schools that play baseball, all located in the western half of the country with the farthest away being San Diego State.
Besides its geographical advantages, Smallcomb said he believes UNC can help the Mountain West in different ways. For one, the Bears could be a travel partner for Air Force. Also as the eighth school in the conference, UNC could balance the Mountain West schedule and help the RPI rating of the other conference teams by playing a difficult nonconference schedule during the week. A stronger RPI helps the conference with at-large bids to the NCAA tournament.
“So we can have an immediate impact on helping their top echelon teams while we progress to try and be one of the top echelon teams,” Smallcomb said.
Former Major League Baseball pitcher Mark Knudson expressed a similar sentiment to that of Smallcomb. Knudson, a baseball analyst for the conference’s television network, “The Mountain,” has been a longtime proponent of the Bears joining the Mountain West.

Jonas Brothers star Nick: I'm not dating Miley Cyrus

Teen star says there's no romance with the Hannah Montana actress
Nick Jonas has laughed off rumours that he’s dating Miley Cyrus.
The Jonas Brothers star was reported to have got together with the 15-year-old Hannah Montana star when his band supported her on tour this year.
But he insists that isn’t the case.
‘Oh, no, definitely not,’ he says. ‘We’re just friends.’
And Nick, 15 – who wears a purity ring to show that he's still a virgin - is determined to wait until he finds someone special before he commits.
‘It’s a personal decision and these rings are a constant reminded to try and live a life of values,’ he says.
The Jonas Brothers’ single SOS is out now and their self-titled album is out on 23 June.

Juno (2007

Juno MacGuff (Page) has always been a free spirit, looking at life in her own unique way but two months after she sleeps the schools best long distance runner Paulie Bleeker (Cera) her life turns upside down. She is pregnant. Knowing that at sixteen she wouldn’t be able to give the child the life she deserves, Juno and her best friend Leah (Thirlby) look for prospective adoptive parents and formulate a plan before she tells her Dad (Simmons) and stepmother (Janney) about her situation.
Every couple of years a small budget, character driven quirky comedy comes along and becomes an instant cinematic gem, ‘Juno’ is one of those movies.
After making a real splash with ‘Thank You for Smoking’ in 2005, Ivan Reitman’s son Jason continues to ride that wave with his second feature length movie, ‘Juno’. The story of a sixteen year old girl who becomes pregnant might not sound like the most original premise for a movie but Reitman and his creative team’s approach to character development and story make this one of those rare low budget, character driven gems.
A movie like this survives on its characters and ‘Juno’ creates one that you instantly take to and care about. These are not your typical Hollywood version of high school students, filled with beautiful people who look like they are in their late twenties who don’t really know about the real world or real problems. Juno, Bleeker and Leah are your average, slightly quirky sixteen year olds who see life as an adventure and come up with their own unique methods of dealing with adult problems. Juno and Leah tackle the problem head on, looking in the local paper for prospective adoptive parents for her unborn child, while Bleeker just throws himself into his running, distancing himself from the problem, even though everyone at school is talking about it and Juno is getting bigger. This added realism, injected with some truly quirky realisations and development that just endear you to the characters even more. Add to this some equally quirky adult characters that have just as many problems as the kids and you have a movie that you will connect with more than anything Hollywood usually turns out.

Pieces showcased in art walk will be linked to businesses

EL CAJON – Artists will strut their stuff at this year's Alley Cat Art Walk on July 11 and 12 in downtown El Cajon.
In its third year, the event features artists, vendors and street performers in a festivallike setting, said Debra Turner-Emerson, event chairwoman. It takes place in “Arts Alley,” between East Main Street and Rea Avenue.
“It's a friendly alley with a lot of character,” Turner-Emerson said, adding that most businesses open their back doors during the event to allow access from the alley. “We're trying to generate an event that's eclectic and brings in diversity in art and culture.”
This year, artists from around the region will paint murals on alley walls. The artwork will be tied to local businesses to give the area a community feel, Turner-Emerson said. In past years, alley trash bins were painted.
The concept for the art walk grew out of several brainstorming sessions between East County businesses and organizations, said Caroline Cassino, promotion coordinator for the El Cajon Community Development Corporation. Like other events throughout San Diego County that tie art to business – including ArtWalk in Little Italy and Ray at Night in North Park – the idea is to generate income for the community while celebrating local talent.
“We want people from all of San Diego to come,” Cassino said. About 9,000 postcards promoting the event were sent throughout the county recently.
New this year will be rock balancing, where art is created out of rock sculptures, and chalk art done by local high school students. Also on display will be professionally painted cars and motorcycles. Attendees can listen to live music, visit the beer garden or pop into a nearby restaurant for a bite to eat.
Arts-oriented businesses in the area include Sophie's Gallery, Silver Creek Fine Art and Custom Framing, and the Olaf Wieghorst Museum.

Mets Fire Willie Randolph Overnight

THATS RITE LA FANS TIME 4 U 2 GO BACK HOME WITHOUT THE RING AS I PREDIVTED. TRY AGAIN NEXT YEAR. STILL NO RING WITHOUT SHAQ. I KNOW THAT PISS U OFF BALLSY
Dre Guevara says…
the Finals will be over 2night!
That’s fucked up what the Mets orginization did, but Karma is a bitch so it’ll come back on them. The finals WILL go to a game 7, but not just because of a guy named Kobe Bean Bryant, because of the commish, mark my word. This finials will solidify as Kobe as one of the greatest ever to play the game especially from coming back from a 3-1 series deficit, just watch the history unfold itself. By the way, L.O. and Pau BETTER come play tonight…
F U Pay Me says…
Yea it was f”d up thing to do by the Mets. But it wasnt really 3 am, its west coast time 12:15 am, if that makes a difference…. Minaya shoulda got fired. Jerry Manuel? Just the name sounds gay. I blame everything on Aaron Heilman, he should burn in hell alive. But on a lighter note, fuck Boston!!!
Minaya is a punk….straight up and down. The Mets will still not make the playoffs, then Willie will get hired to another team next season, and do 10 times better. How can you fire the manager when you’re closer gives up 3 straight save opportunities (I know they fired him for more than that, but you know they put those loses on Willie)….and shouldnt Bobby Cox be fired? The Braves havent sniffed the world series since 99. Boston will take it tonight, pop bottles, then Kobe’s wife will leave him cause he’s a loser…….get well Wang, we’ll need you come October…GO YANKEES!!!!!!!!!!
THE YANKS FIRED TORRE SO ANYONE CAN GET CUT
