Big Brown poised for Triple Crown bid

By DAN GELSTON – 8 hours ago
NEW YORK (AP) — OK, Big Brown. It’s time for the big date with history. All the obstacles in the colt’s spectacular bid for the first Triple Crown in 30 years are fading faster than the pack in his Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes victories.
Big Brown’s quarter crack is patched and the sturdy hoof that helped him stampede to an undefeated record is as strong as ever.
The path to victory got even easier for Big Brown early Saturday when Casino Drive, the morning-line second choice in the Belmont, was scratched due to a bruise in his left hind foot.
Now only longshots and the grueling 1 1/2-mile race stand between Big Brown and racing immortality.
Nothing has changed trainer Rick Dutrow’s Jr’s mind that the strapping bay colt will celebrate in the winner’s circle at the Belmont Stakes on Saturday and win the first Triple Crown in 30 years.
“He’s just the coolest horse that ever lived,” Dutrow said.
It’s been 30 years since Affirmed swept the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont to become horse racing’s 11th Triple Crown winner. The drought has left the sport starved to anoint a savior. Three times this decade a horse won the first two legs of the series only to get tripped up in the Belmont.
Triple Crown Brown has a nice ring to it and the nickname could be his by nightfall.
“I just kind of daydream about being in these situations,” jockey Kent Desormeaux said. “I dream about how I would react, what I should do.”
Desormeaux is trying to make amends for blowing his shot a decade ago at making Triple Crown history. He led Real Quiet to wins in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, then the horse slowed down the stretch in the Belmont and lost by a nose to Victory Gallop.

Christian Siriano Joins Access As 'Fierce' Kids Choice Awards …

Christian Siriano is bringing his “fierce” self to the Kids' Choice Awards orange carpet later this month.
Fresh off his coronation as the new king of “Project Runway,” the pint-sized designer will be joining Access Hollywood as a guest correspondent for Nickelodeon's 2008 Kids' Choice Awards on March 29 in Los Angeles.
Prior to the show, Siriano will make his Access debut on March 28, when he gives viewers a sneak peek at what he'll wearing to the event. He'll also show Access how he creates and maintains his signature “bi-level fashion hawk” hairdo.
And on the orange carpet, stars like awards' host Jack Black will have their fashion looks rated by the young designer.
“I think it's fabulous that I'll be on the red carpet checking to see if anyone is a hot mess,” Siriano said, borrowing one of his trademark phrases fans heard him saying on “Runway.” “Watch out — you know I'll be fierce with my comments.”
The 22-year-old “Runway” winner will bring his energy and flair for fashion as he also hands out Access' “Fierce Fashion Awards” to all those deserving celebrities on the orange carpet.
“Christian IS fierce, fabulous and ferosh and he is a pop culture catchphrase machine,” Access Hollywood supervising producer and style maven Ryan Patterson said. “He also really knows fashion — he's a style stud who will stand out on the carpet with his one-of-a-kind hairdo and electric personality and most importantly, he'll be able to spot out whose fashion is a 'hot mess' and whose fashion is 'fierce.'”

Taiwan, Australia head for do-or-die Olympic qualifier

Taiwan, Australia head for do-or-die Olympic qualifier
By Michael Kearney
Wednesday, Mar 12, 2008, Page 20
Taiwan and Australia face a do-or-die game at 6:30pm in Douliou on day five of the IBAF Final Olympic Qualifying Tournament today. The winner will be on track for a berth in the Olympics, while the loser will be left hoping for a miracle.
Taiwan will probably send Yang Chien-fu to the mound. Yang, who plays for the Sinon Bulls, pitched well against Mexico on Saturday, giving up one run and five hits over five innings for the win. He only threw 69 pitches, so three days’ rest should be enough.
Australia will most likely call on 18-year-old phenomenon Steve Kent, a pitcher in the Atlanta Braves farm system.
Taiwan and Australia are both vying for a top-three finish, which would give them a place in the Beijing Olympics. Taiwan are tied with Canada for second place with three wins and one loss, but must still face powerhouse South Korea. Australia are tied with Germany for fourth place with two wins and two losses. Taiwan are their last remaining opponent among the tournament’s “big five.”
If Taiwan does lose today, their best hope of advancing would be to win their remaining matches against South Africa and South Korea and for Canada to beat South Korea. Then, barring major upsets, South Korea, Taiwan and Australia would all be tied for second at five wins and three losses. In that case Australia would be eliminated, because after head-to-head matches, the second tiebreaker is runs allowed, and the Aussies are still hurting from their 16-2 drubbing at the hands of the Koreans on Saturday.
