A major restructuring announced June 3 by General Motors Corp. is expected to have a positive impact on GM’s Tonawanda engine plant.
The local facility, which has about 1,800 employees, is expected to benefit from the automaker’s plan to add third shifts to Lordstown, Ohio, and Orion Township, Mich., assembly plants. Both are customers of the Tonawanda plant.
"Once production schedules are determined at the Lordstown and Orion plants, it’s anticipated that the third shift additions could have a positive impact on production schedules at Tonawanda Engine," plant manager Steve Finch said.
He was unable to add further details.
GM (NYSE: GM) said that starting in September, it will add a third shift at the Michigan plant that makes Chevrolet Malibu mid-size cars and the Ohio plant that builds Chevrolet Cobalt small cars.
Chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner said GM also will develop a new Chevrolet compact car for U.S. and international markets and a successor to the current Chevrolet Aveo small car.
The Aveo will be produced in Lordstown starting in 2010, subject to talks with local and Ohio officials about incentives, GM said.
As another element of the restructuring, GM said it will production at its Oshawa, Ont., pickup truck plant, axing about 2,500 jobs in the process.
The plant, which produces the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, is expected to close in 2009.
Three other plant that assemble pickups or sport utility vehicles are also scheduled to be closed — in Janesville, Wis., Moraine, Ohio, and Toluca, Mexico. The company said it does not plan to allocate any new products to the four plants slated for closure.
