COPPERAS COVE – The Lady Dawgs’ magic number to reach the playoffs is down to one.
The Copperas Cove softball team knocked off Waco High School 5-1 on Friday to leapfrog the Lions for third place in the District 16-4A standings. With two games remaining, the Lady Dawgs (13-13, 4-4 16-4A) need just one win or a loss by Waco (3-5 16-4A) to clinch their second consecutive postseason berth.
“This was a huge win for us,” Lady Dawgs coach Jim Lowery said after the game. “This game puts us in the driver’s seat. If we lose this game, it was over, that would have ended our season.”
Shortstop Shaba Brown carried the load offensively for the Cove. The sophomore was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate, including a solo homer over the right-center field wall in the fourth inning.
As she rounded first, Brown gave a hop and skip to go along with a big fist pump. It was her first varsity home run.
“She’s going to be a fun player to watch for a long time here,” Lowery said. “There’s no ceiling to what she could she can achieve.”
Brown added three singles – one to each outfield position – and scored four of the five Lady Dawg runs. The shortstop also had two stolen bases on head-first slides.
On defense, she provided some acrobatics with a full flip when she took the field in the fifth inning after her roundtripper.
“She’s a good one,” Lowery said. “And she was the catalyst tonight.”
Cynthia Roman took the hill for the Lady Dawgs and shut down the Lions offensively with a riser, a fastball and a changeup. Roman went the distance (seven innings) and struck out 13 batters. She gave up just one unearned run on one hit.

A Fresno student was killed during an officer-involved shooting on the Roosevelt High School campus Wednesday.
According to police, an officer assigned to the school, walked out of his office just before noon and was immediately struck in the head with a baseball bat. The officer fell to the ground compromising his primary firearm, but was able to retrieve his secondary weapon, which he fired at the suspect.
The suspect, who has been described as a 17-year-old sophomore, fell to the ground and was pronounced dead on the scene despite CPR efforts.
Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer described the situation as “tragic” and reassured parents that no students were ever in danger.
