Duke’s lacrosse team defeated
Johns Hopkins ended Duke’s lacrosse season for the third time in four years and spoiled the last chance for the players stained by a stripper scandal to leave with an NCAA championship.
Johns Hopkins’ 10-9 victory over top-seeded Duke on Saturday put it in Monday’s championship game against Syracuse, which beat Virginia 12-11 in double overtime.
Five Duke players had been granted an extra year of eligibility to make up for their aborted 2006 season, when since-disbarred district attorney Mike Nifong charged three players with raping a stripper hired to dance at a party.
•On the women’s side, Penn and Northwestern meet today in the title game.
Noted marathoner Haile Gebrselassie discovered his old legs can carry him well in the 10,000 meters.
Gebrselassie ran his fastest 10,000 meters in four years at the FBK Games on Saturday at Hengelo, Netherlands. He was within the 27-minute mark he sought to be included on the Ethiopian team for the Beijing Olympics.
Meanwhile, in the 100 hurdles, world indoor champion Lolo Jones of the United States won in 12.87 seconds.

Erin Rawlick came to the Naval Academy with the intention of playing women's soccer. She switched to women's lacrosse as a plebe and is now the nation's leading goal scorer at the Division I level.
It is due largely to the outstanding performance of non-recruited players such as Rawlick that Navy has enjoyed so much success in its inaugural varsity season. The Midshipmen (13-3) have established an NCAA record for wins by a first-year program.
Rawlick is one of 21 holdovers from Navy's club program, which went 18-5 and was runner-up in the US Lacrosse/Women's Division Intercollegiate Associates national tournament.
"We took the mindset that this is a Division I program now and it will take more dedication and commitment to be successful," Rawlick said. "Fortunately, we have a phenomenal coaching staff that has shown us what it takes and done so much to help us improve."
Navy made an impressive debut in the Patriot League, placing fourth out of seven schools with a 4-2 record. The Midshipmen hope to continue their magical campaign by capturing the Patriot League Tournament, being held tomorrow and Sunday at American University. Winner advances to an NCAA Tournament play-in game against the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference champion.
"I think this team is still hungry to make a statement, to prove how tough we can be," Navy head coach Cindy Timchal said. "We're playing solid lacrosse right now. What I want more than anything is for the players to put it all out there and play as well as possible."
Navy meets top-seeded American in tomorrow's opening semifinal while second-seeded Colgate faces No. 3 Lehigh in the nightcap. Navy nipped American 13-12 during the regular season, but was beaten 19-10 by Colgate and 15-12 by Lehigh.
"We are pumped and ready to go. All four teams are capable so it's going to be a matter of which shows up the strongest," Rawlick said. "We know it will take two tough wins, but we are going in confident."
