Lottery Sales in South Carolina Hurting School Districts

The lottery systems in most states were set up for additional money to be poured into the school systems in the state. When lottery numbers drop, however, it causes big problems for individual school districts.
The state of South Carolina has always funneled money from their lottery sales into the school system in the state. The lottery sales, however, have not been strong as of late, causing concern among local school districts.
The sales numbers from July through January were down $5.5 million from the same time period last year. Because of that, public schools will receive no money from the lottery next month.
Since local school districts have teachers that are paid directly from the lottery fund, it will be up to them to find a way to have those teachers paid.
College scholarships are the priority in the state. they must first be paid before any money can go to any high, middle or elementary schools.
While the problem is perceived as only temporary, it does put local districts in a predicament at the current time. The state is hoping the sales will return back to where money can once again be distributed.

Hundreds Gather To Rally Against Casino Gambling

Posted by: G Location: Eastern Kentucky on Mar 10, 2008 at 09:48 AM
I was for casinos before I ever knew who Beshear was and yes I voted for him mainly because of gambling(and because Fletcher is an idoiot) I am a member of the horse industry and in the industry we are having a similiar problem with horse slaughter. We seem to have the same emotionally challenged individuals crying that it’s morally wrong to slaughter a horse. I look at it like this; I’d rather see a horse die than starve in a welfare family’s backyard. I’ve done extensive research on both issues. I’m neither naive or ignorant. I happen to be a college graduate. Look at in terms of what is our main legal cash crop…horses! Tobacco went out a few years ago remember? Well the only way to keep our position in the horse industry is to allow casinos, but as I said it has it’s other perks and benefits too. A certain % will go towards roads, a % goes towards education/KHEES money as someone pointed out and just because casinos are here doesn’t mean you have to go to them.

Family Members Accused Of Stealing From Lottery Winner

Three men, two of whom are his own relatives, have been arrested for the crime.
The three men, a father and son and a family friend, are all the talk On Oregon Avenue where they live in East Haven.
“My father told me this morning so the whole neighborhood knows,” said resident Steve Estep.
What they know is that Raffael Iuliano, his 18-year old son, and Joseph Bernardo, a longtime neighbor, are accused of stealing a million dollars in lottery winnings from Iuliano’s father.
The victim won the jackpot in 1986 and investigators said he kept the money in a safe in his home in North Branford.
Last month, it was discovered missing and police said several family members suspected the Iuliano’s might be involved.
“They were making rather large purchases and spending money on extravagant things that seemed out of the ordinary and raised red flags,” said Lt. David D’Ancicco of the North Branford Police Department.
Those large purchases included cars, ATV’s, and vacation and in fact the father and son had just returned from a cruise and Bernardo from Disney World when they were arrested over the weekend.
“Ultimately we were able to recover approximately $200,000 of the funds that were stolen from sources directly involved with the people who were arrested,” said Lt. David D’Ancicco.

Georgia Lottery Winner

Lottery drawing tonight for $270 million
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Sure, the jackpot for Friday night’s Mega Millions drawing has grown to a whopping $270 million, but the big prize is still $120 million lower than the Georgia Lottery’s largest-ever pot.
That distinction belongs to the $390 million Mega Millions jackpot on March 6, 2007. Two tickets, sold in Dalton and in New Jersey, matched all six numbers and shared that windfall.
Eddie Nabors, a 52-year-old truck driver from the Whitfield County town of Rocky Face, won half that record pot. The single father of three, who chose to receive his winnings in a lump sum, took home about $80 million after taxes.
Friday’s jackpot, the sixth-largest in Georgia Lottery history, is worth about $10.3 million a year, before taxes, for 26 years, lottery officials said.
If a single winner chooses the cash option, he or she will instantly become a millionaire 164 times over, again before Uncle Sam gets his hand into the $164 million payout.
The Mega Millions jackpot has rolled over 14 times since the last winning ticket, for $33 million, was sold in Texas for the Jan. 1 drawing.
Mega Millions is played in Georgia, Virginia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Texas, Washington and California.
Since the game’s inception in May, 2002, there have been 77 Mega Millions jackpot winners, with eight of those winning tickets sold in Georgia.
